Handcrafted Indonesian savories meals following traditional home-style recipes.

Jennifer Huang grew up in South Sumatra, and fell in love with baking as a young girl. When her family immigrated to the Bay Area, she realized her homeland had little-to-no culinary presence in Northern California — even though Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and one of the largest countries in the world.

This inspired Huang to learn how to cook, first baking her favorite childhood desserts, and eventually taking professional culinary classes. She founded 1000 Layer Bakery in 2013 to provide Indonesian cakes and desserts, among others, to Dropbox and other corporate customers in the bay area. Jennifer joined La Cocina food business incubator in 2019. During the pandemic, she successfully pivoted to online retail with pickup and delivery throughout the Bay Area. Jennifer relaunched her business as NUSA in 2021 and you can find her classic Indonesian cakes and desserts every Saturday at Ferry Plaza farmers market.

Nusa literally means “island,” and represents a vision to introduce and broaden the appeal of Indonesian food across the Bay Area. Indonesian food is a diverse fusion of indigenous cultures with Chinese, Indian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Middle Eastern influences.
